Strategies in Internationalizing Teacher Education: Global Read Aloud

Join Shea Kerkhoff, Ph.D., for an AACTE Lunch & Learn about The Global Read Aloud — a virtual, international learning opportunity founded by teacher Pernille Ripp in 2010 with the vision of one book to connect the world. It has expanded into an annual learning event held each October with millions of children and teachers connecting to read and discuss books. In the session, Kerkhoff will walk through the process of getting connected with the program and how to engage with both teacher education and K-12 examples.

Shea Kerkhoff is an associate professor of literacy and secondary education at the University of Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL), dedicated to promoting teaching for global-readiness through integrated cross-cultural collaboration and global problem-based learning. In addition to her academic role, she serves as the Education Director for Going Global, Inc., and previously held the same position at 4 the World. Kerkhoff received numerous grants to bring digital literacy professional development, in partnership with teachers , to Kitale, Kenya. She is also affiliated faculty with the Show Me Literacies Collaborative. In this capacity, she serves as a co-PI on the Missouri Comprehensive Literacy State Development grant.

Kerkhoff holds a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction with a focus on literacy and language education from North Carolina State University. Her research utilizes mixed methods to investigate critical, digital, and global literacies, with a particular emphasis on adolescent literacy instruction. She has been recognized for her outstanding research and has published in esteemed journals such as Teaching and Teacher Education, Reading and Writing: An Interdisciplinary Journal, and Reading Research Quarterly. In 2018, she was named a Longview Foundation Global Teacher Educator fellow and currently serves as mentor for the program. Kerkhoff is passionate about education at home and abroad
