AACTE Congratulates 2017 National Superintendent of the Year

(March 23, 2017, Washington, DC) – AACTE congratulates Matthew Utterback for his recognition as 2017 National Superintendent of the Year, announced this month by AASA, The School Superintendents Association. Utterback, the 2017 Oregon State Superintendent of the Year, leads the North Clackamas School District in Milwaukie, Oregon, and holds education degrees from Western Oregon University and Lewis and Clark College.

“We congratulate Superintendent Utterback on this honor and celebrate the success of his district in improving equity and achievement for all students,” said Sharon P. Robinson, President and CEO of AACTE. “We also commend the AACTE member institutions that helped prepare Utterback, whose contributions to educational excellence are evident in Oregon and beyond.”

Utterback has nearly 30 distinguished years in public education, all in the North Clackamas School District, where he served as a teacher, principal, and central office leader before becoming superintendent in 2012. Serving more than 17,000 students on 32 school campuses, the district is known for its innovative career and technical education program and for its recent drive to improve results for marginalized groups—resulting in a dramatic increase in the graduation rate over the past 5 years.
