Joan Auchter, Director, Professional Learning
National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP)
Joan Auchter leads the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) professional development ensuring that principals, assistant principals, and aspiring middle and high school leaders have the research, information, programs and conferences that enable them to successfully lead their schools. Prior to joining NASSP, Ms. Auchter was the Chief Learning Officer at Cricket Media, an education company that connects children across the globe to learn together. A lifelong educator, Ms. Auchter also served as the Chief Program and Innovation Officer at the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards and the Executive Director of the GED Testing Service. She has also held positions with the College Board, West Virginia’s State Department of Education and the Logan County Board of Education.
Timothy Drake, Assistant Professor /Researcher
North Carolina State University
Timothy A. Drake, Ph.D. is an assistant professor of Education Leadership and Policy at North Carolina State University. He is also Project Director for the Wallace Foundation's University Principal Preparation Initiative (UPPI). His research focuses on the policies and practices that shape teacher effectiveness and principal preparation and development.
Jarmon Flowers, Graduate Assistant/Principal
William & Mary, School Leadership Institute
Jarmon is a doctoral student in the Educational Policy, Planning and Leadership Program for K-12 Administration at William & Mary. He is a graduate assistant in the School Leadership Institute, which provides professional development to administrators and teachers across the state of Virginia. He has earned degrees and certifications from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and the University of Minnesota. Prior to the doctoral program, Mr. Flowers served as a principal, assistant principal, instructional coach, and teacher. Additionally, he has presented at multiple conferences and participated in several professional institutes focused on advocacy, leading, teaching and learning. His research interests include professional identity of educational leaders, principalship, equity and rural education. Outside of academia, he enjoys spending time with family and friends, traveling and reading.

Annual Meeting Site Selection Procedures
AACTE considers many factors in determining its future locations for the Annual Meeting, which brings together over 2,000 individuals in the educator preparation field each year. These factors include but are not limited to geographic and cultural diversity, attendee cost, available meeting space, and social justice considerations.
The following priorities guide Annual Meeting site selection:
- Selection of a site 4-5 years in advance.
- Rotation among U.S. regions, with at least one western region destination every five years.
- Urban destination with accessible airlift, affordable airfare, and local travel infrastructure.
- Available dates that coincide with AACTE's preferred time frame of late February or early March.
- Favorable antidiscrimination and accessibility policies, including those related to race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, religion, physical ability, health conditions, socioeconomic status, and marital, domestic, or parental status.
- Presence of AACTE members in the vicinity of the destination.
- Adequate amount of meeting rooms, exhibit areas, and other space to meet the Annual Meeting's needs.
- Accessibility of facilities/space.
- Compact Annual Meeting footprint.
- Proximity of hotel partners.
- Transportation logistics and cost.
- Sizeable block of rooms available at primary hotels.
- Guest room rates.
- Complimentary facilities or services provided.
- Rental rates for facilities.
- Food and beverage expenditure requirements.
- Labor expenses.
- Audio/visual rental costs.
- Incentives offered by either the destination or its subsidiary partners.
