Urge Your Members of Congress to Cosponsor Educators for America Act

To address the teacher shortage our nation faces, Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) and Rep. Alma Adams (D-NC) introduced the Educators for America Act with the input of experts like you in the field of educator preparation. The legislation is almost two years in the making. The bill will “build the capacity of educator preparation programs to ensure all students have access to profession-ready educators; recruit new and diverse educators into the profession; invest in partnership between higher education, state and local partners, and support innovation to meet the changing needs of students.”

Urge Full Funding for IDEA

Congress passed the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) in 1975 to ensure that every child with a disability has access to an education. The legislation called for the federal government to pay 40% of the average per pupil expenditure for special education. However, the federal government has never met that aspiration and current funding is at just 15.7%. Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) and Representative Jared Huffman (D-CA) recently introduced the IDEA Full Funding Act, which would fulfill Congress’ commitment to IDEA.

Urge Congress to Invest in Educator Preparation Programs

Congress is currently debating President Biden’s Build Back Better, also known as reconciliation, which would provide historic investments in families, education and the workforce, including educator preparation programs. Unfortunately, it is not clear that the Senate will support this extraordinary investment in our nation’s educators. But your voice can help ensure that these funds are included in the final legislation.
