Urge Your Members of Congress to Cosponsor Educators for America Act

To address the teacher shortage our nation faces, Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) and Rep. Alma Adams (D-NC) introduced the Educators for America Act with the input of experts like you in the field of educator preparation. The legislation is almost two years in the making. The bill will “build the capacity of educator preparation programs to ensure all students have access to profession-ready educators; recruit new and diverse educators into the profession; invest in partnership between higher education, state and local partners, and support innovation to meet the changing needs of students.”

Call Your Members of Congress to Support the Loan Forgiveness for Educators Act

Senator Ben Ray Luján (NM) and Rep. Teresa Leger Fernandez (NM-3) plan to introduce the Loan Forgiveness for Educators Act of 2022, which would reform the Teacher Loan Forgiveness (TLF) Program.  Specifically, this bill would update the TLF program to have federal government pay the monthly federal loan bills of educators as they teach in high-need schools or early education programs, and then completely retire any remaining debt after five years of service.  If enacted, the legislation will incentivize educators to go into and continue serving in early education programs and high need public schools and diversify the profession.

Civics Secures Democracy Act Reintroduced in the Senate

The Civics Secures Democracy Act is a bipartisan initiative to support states and local school districts in offering the civic education needed to equip youth in the United States with the civic knowledge, skills, and dispositions to become informed and engaged members of society.  It would create a variety of grants to states, nonprofits, institutions of higher education, and civics education researchers to support and expand access to civics and history education. It includes the USA Civics Act, which would reauthorize existing grant programs targeted to strengthen American civics programs and promote more comprehensive studies of American history. And, importantly, the Act specifically prohibits use of the funds for the development of any national curriculum in American history or civics education.

AACTE urges you to reach out to your Members of Congress to encourage them to support the Civics Secures Democracy Act.
