Howard University’s Award-Winning Elementary Education International Cultural Immersion Program Webinar Slides Howard University has recently been recognized with the 2024 AACTE Best Practice Award in Support of Global and International Perspectives for its elementary education program that integrates global experiences into the curriculum. In this AACTE Lunch & Learn, members will learn more about this program and how it serves as an exemplar in the intercultural, global, and cross-cultural arenas. In the school of education, Howard University weaves Black history into its programming, curricula, and practices within the teacher education programs as its international focus is on the connectedness of traditions, cultures, and experiences of those from the African diaspora around the world. The elementary education program culminates with an international experience where teacher candidates participate in a weeklong cultural immersion experience engaging in a breadth of activities and experiences that fully immerse them in the culture of the country. Speaker: Katherine Norris, Ed.D. Associate Professor and Chair Department of Curriculum and Instruction Howard University School of Education Katherine Norris, Ed.D. serves as department chair of Curriculum and Instruction at Howard University. She has more than 33 years of experience in education both at the K-12 level (with the Philadelphia School District) and in higher education. Norris is co-editor of the textbook Social Justice and Parent Partnerships in Multicultural Education Contexts which was recognized by IGI as a critical core reference text. Her areas of research focus are multicultural children’s literature, creating home and school partnerships between diverse families, schools, and communities, and diversifying teacher education.
