As part of the Global Education Faculty PLC Professional Development Series, join us as we explore different perspectives on how recent world events have led to an even greater need for global citizenship through the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and technology. Panelists also will make the case for learning to learn with technology rather than trying to control its evolution. The session will showcase examples of pedagogy, practice, and actions teachers can employ with students in developing global competencies.

吴林 Lin Wu, a first-generation college student and immigrant from China, is an assistant professor of teacher education at Western Oregon University. He taught primarily working-class Mexican-American students in southern Arizona for 7 years and earned his Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction from the University of Washington-Seattle. His dissertation, informed by his K–12 teaching experiences along the U.S.-Mexico borderlands, won the 2022 AACTE Outstanding Dissertation Award. Wu’s research interests include race and empire, Asian diasporas, and multicultural teacher education. Wu has published in peer-reviewed journals, such as Social Studies and the Young Learner, The Educational Forum, International Journal of Qualitative Studies in Education, and Urban Education. Outside of academia, Wu enjoys traveling with and cooking for his family, and reading bilingual (Mandarin Chinese and English) stories to his daughter.

Michael Kopish is an associate professor of teacher education at Ohio University, where he teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in social studies education, global education, and teacher education. He designs courses to prepare teacher candidates and graduate students through frequent, high-quality, and equitable civic and community engagement opportunities to advance the democratic purposes of schooling. In addition, he serves as a faculty fellow for the Center for Campus and Community Engagement. He offers professional development and support to faculty who endeavor to infuse service learning and community engagement opportunities in their courses. Kopish is an author or co-author of several book chapters and peer-reviewed articles based on his research interests, including service learning, global citizenship education, civic engagement, and social studies teacher preparation.

Iveta Silova is professor and associate dean of global engagement at Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College at Arizona State University (ASU). She is a member of the ASU’s Global Futures Scientists and Scholars Network, which comprises an interdisciplinary group of scientists and scholars working together to solve existing and emerging challenges of planetary health. Silova’s research focuses on building transcultural and transdisciplinary foundations for re-envisioning education futures toward planetary sustainability and ecological justice. Since 2020, Silova has been co-leading a Mastercard Foundation-funded digital education transformation initiative, which supports a network of 10 universities globally to deliver high-quality and inclusive online instruction and provide virtual support to all students. Silova is an associate editor of a peer-reviewed, open access journal Education Policy Analysis Archives and past president of the Comparative and International Education Society (CIES).

Yong Zhao, Ph.D.

Zhao is a foundation distinguished professor in the school of education at the University of Kansas. He is also a professorial fellow at the Mitchell Institute for Health and Education Policy, Victoria University in Australia. He previously served as the presidential chair and director of the Institute for Global and Online Education in the College of Education, University of Oregon, where he was also a professor in the Department of Educational Measurement, Policy, and Leadership. His works focus on the implications of globalization and technology on education. He has published over 100 articles and 30 books, including Counting What Counts: Reframing Education Outcomes (2016), Never Send a Human to Do a Machine’s Job: Correcting Top 5 Ed Tech Mistakes (2015), Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Dragon: Why China has the Best (and Worst) Education System in the World (2014), Catching Up or Leading the Way: American Education in the Age of Globalization (2009) and World Class Learners: Educating Creative and Entrepreneurial Students (2012). He is a recipient of the Early Career Award from the American Educational Research Association and an elected fellow of the International Academy for Education.
