Part 1 – ATLAS and FAVSTE: A Tool and a Framework for Using Video in Teacher Preparation In the face of COVID-19 and the closing of U.S. schools, the opportunity to meet F2F – at both the K-12 and university level – has been taken away. As such educators are looking for alternative approaches to instruction – including instruction in teacher preparation. Many teacher educators are looking to video tasks as the best ‘approximation of practice’, but without a lot of guidance about how to most effectively use this approach. A group of [science] teacher educators, working under the leadership of NBPTS, has been using the ATLAS (Accomplished Teaching, Learning and Schools) library as a tool and the FAVSTE (framework for Analyzing Video in Science Teacher Education) as a framework for maximizing the efficacy of video tasks. Over the course of two sessions, a group of individuals involved in this work will introduce participants to ATLAS and the FAVSTE and describe ‘models of use’ to illustrate how to use the combination to effectively utilize video tasks in teacher preparation. These ideas are applicable across different levels of certification (elementary, middle, and secondary) and school contexts.
