Chicago, IL. (February 6, 2009) The American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) has selected Dr. William C. Reed of Darden College of Education at Old Dominion University to receive the 2009 Outstanding Dissertation Award. The award will be presented on Sunday, February 8, during the Charles W. Hunt Lecture at the Association’s 61st Annual Meeting and Exhibits in Chicago, Illinois.
The Outstanding Dissertation Award is sponsored by AACTE’s Committee on Research and Dissemination. The award recognizes excellence in doctoral dissertation research that contributes to the knowledge base of teacher education or of teaching and learning with implications for teacher education.
Reed’s dissertation, “Teachers’ Education Factors and Their Influence on Formative Assessment Processes,” sought to identify elements of teachers’ education and training that may be associated with their capacity to use formative testing to inform instruction and, ultimately, improve student achievement. His research involved the identification of teachers’ educational and training variables that might influence their abilities to analyze formative testing results, interpret the analyses, and modify instruction so as to improve student’s achievements in third-grade mathematics.
