The limited definition of “professional” post-baccalaureate programs recently proposed by the U.S. Department of Education has drawn attention on social media, focused primarily on the importance of recognizing educators, nurses, social workers, and others as professionals. This is just one of a series of major changes to federal student loan programs that will have a significant impact on educator preparation programs and their students. These changes will go into effect on July 1, 2026, so the time is right to plan for the potential impact on student recruitment and retention.
