Lunch and Learn Series: Building Partnerships to Address the Educator Shortage in California

During this AACTE Lunch and Learn, participants will learn about the partnership developed by the Riverside County Office of Education and California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB), a Hispanic and minority-serving institution. The mission of this partnership is to support teacher candidates into, through, and beyond teacher induction. Participants will also hear about recent findings from the Learning Policy Institute impacting teacher outcomes and how the “partnership” and CSUSB have integrated intentional practices to keep teachers in the credential program and profession.

Karen Escalante is an assistant professor in the Watson College of Education at California State University San Bernardino (CSUSB), teaching pedagogical courses grounded in social justice and humanizing pedagogy. Escalante is an executive board member and president-elect of the California Council on Teacher Education (CCTE) and serves as part of the research team and advisory board for UCLA’s Center for the Transformation of School’s California Educator Diversity Project. Her line of research focuses on the through line between culturally responsive teaching and teaching performance assessments, teacher candidate/in-service teacher belonging, and operating within the third space (boundary spanning) to support P-12 and teacher preparation programs. As of June of 2023, Escalante is also the co-director of the CSUSB Ed.D. Program.
