AACTE Renames Prestigious JTE Award in Honor of Ed Prep Trailblazer
(Dec. 3, 2024, Washington, D.C.) – AACTE (The American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education) announced the renaming of its Outstanding Journal of Teacher Education (JTE) Article Award to the Martin Haberman Outstanding Journal of Teacher Education (JTE) Article Award.
This award historically has recognized exemplary scholarship in educator preparation and teaching and learning practices with implications for the field and is overseen by the AACTE Committee on Research and Dissemination and sponsored by SAGE Publications.
The renaming pays tribute to Martin Haberman, Ph.D., (1932–2012), an innovative scholar, educator, and advocate for equitable access to quality teacher preparation. Haberman served as the first university-based editor of JTE and significantly influenced teacher education through his work with underserved communities.
“Acknowledged posthumously, the renaming of the AACTE Outstanding JTE Article award to the Martin Haberman Outstand JTE Article is timely as this honor occurs at the inception of the journal’s 75th anniversary,” said Valerie Hill-Jackson, Ed.D., co-editor of JTE and an assistant professor at Texas A&M University.
Awarded annually, the 2025 recipient(s) of this prestigious honor will be recognized on Thursday, Feb. 20, during the AACTE 2025 Annual Meeting Awards Ceremony in Long Beach, Calif.
“Haberman’s legacy is, at once, our inheritance and our instruction to be better in our practice, research, and policy pursuits in teacher education,” Hill-Jackson said. “As the first university-based editor of JTE, the history of teacher education will look kindly upon Haberman’s unparalleled impact on the field.”
