Beyond the Obvious: The Intersection of Educator Dispositions, Ethics, and Law

Teaching is a highly nuanced and complex profession that is filled with professional risks and vulnerabilities – especially, ironically, for the most caring of educators. By teaching and assessing professional dispositions, educator preparation programs provide an essential framework of common values to teacher candidates. But dispositions may not suffice to inform the multitude of daily decisions teachers must make in the fast-paced schooling environment – an environment in which there is little social distance, and teachers are often expected to take on roles commonly filled by parents, counselors, or others.
How can teacher educators assist their candidates in navigating through the broad range of gray areas that they will face as professionals?
Through an authentic case study, research, and models of understanding, the presenters of this webinar will make the case that in order to mitigate professional risks for the practitioner, we must work toward providing an intentional and sustained focus on not only professional dispositions, but also professional ethics and the statutes that govern an educator’s license.
