Leveraging Community Resources to Strengthen Clinical Practice for New Principals: Investigation Techniques for School Safety

Prompt, thorough investigations are an important tool for gathering critical information that affects the safety and well-being of a school, yet many new principals lack training on how to conduct fair and competent investigations. Expert panelists will discuss best practices, legal guidelines, and common mistakes.
Traci Gile is principal of Lopez Elementary in Fort Collins, Colorado. She has been a proud public school educator for 20 years. When she was a high school teacher, she became an inaugural staff member of the Colorado Online School Consortium, and she oversaw and provided training in technology integration and 21st-century skills to all instructional staff. Additionally, she designed and taught induction courses for new teachers entering the district. Another part of the position was creating professional development for teachers in standards-based teaching and learning as well as best practices in assessment. This experience led to consulting work in Mapleton School District in Denver and the parochial schools in New Orleans, LA. In 2004, she entered the principal licensure program at Colorado State University's School of Teacher Education and Principal Preparation. After completing the program, she became principal of Mary Blair Elementary School in 2005. During this time, she went back to Colorado State to pursue a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and wrote her dissertation on principal leadership during systemic reform, specifically focusing on Response to Intervention.
Roy Tripi is dean of students at Wellington Middle School in Wellington, Colorado. He spent 19 years teaching physical education and health at Rocky Mountain High School in Fort Collins before enrolling in the principal licensure program at Colorado State University. He is now in his first year as a school leader and has enjoyed this new opportunity to work with students and teachers to maintain a positive learning environment for all students.
Stason Ikenouye is a private investigator and professional instructor with over 10 years of law enforcement, special operations, security, investigative, and instructional experience. A POST-certified firearms instructor and NRA Patrol Rifle instructor, he has served as a SWAT operator, police detective, county critical incident response team detective, field evidence technician, school resource officer, and field training officer. Ikenouye has also served as a security supervisor for a U.S. Military installation and was responsible for the physical security of the premises and personnel. His professional recognitions include a lifesaving award during a methamphetamine lab investigation, a unit citation for investigative efforts during a shooting investigation, and an award of valor for disregarding personal safety and entering a burning building and carrying an unconscious victim to safety.
