Principals as Transformation Leaders: Support for New Leaders

The pressure is on leaders to perform at a high level in schools from their first day on the job, yet support for newly practicing school leaders is often nonexistent. Join us for this webinar, the fifth in a series supported by The Wallace Foundation, to hear new school leaders’ perspectives on the support systems needed during the critical first years in a leadership role. Panelists will also discuss the potential for networking opportunities with other new administrators with a focus on renewal and retention.

Lindsey Matkin, Second-Year Assistant Principal, Preston Middle School, Fort Collins, Colorado
Matkin earned her B.A. in Spanish and M.A. in education and human resource studies at Colorado State University. Her 17 years in the Poudre School District began with teaching Spanish at Lincoln Junior High School. Several years later, Matkin had the opportunity to be part of the staff who opened Kinard Core Knowledge Middle School, a National Blue Ribbon school. After 10 years of teaching Spanish and serving as department leader at Kinard, she stepped out of the classroom to serve as academic dean. In fall 2016, Matkin joined the administrative team at Preston Middle (STEM) School as assistant principal. Through shared leadership, her mission is to inspire, empower, and encourage all kids to see beyond the four walls of the classroom and dream big! She is committed to providing equal opportunities to all students to learn at high levels by equipping them with the knowledge and skills to become positive contributors in the school and the community. Matkin’s desire is to create a strong school community where adults work together and model for the students what it means to be a part of a team – where they believe together they are better.
Cory Erlandson, Second-Year Principal, Wilson Junior High School, Manitowoc, Wisconsin
Erlandson graduated from the University of Wisconsin and began his career teaching history, economics, and government at Wilson and Lincoln High School in 2003. Over time, he added a master’s degree from UW-La Crosse, earned National Board certification, and served as social studies department chair. He recently spent 2 years teaching middle school geography in Fort Collins, Colorado, where he was also able to instruct future teachers at Colorado State University and work toward his principal licensure. These experiences have worked together to shape his belief that all students can and must learn; his values of relationships, engagement, and growth; and his vision that when we get it right, we will see students enjoying their daily experience of academic, social, and personal growth. He is deeply committed to being present and available to students and staff during the school day, advancing the Wilson vision and core values, and empowering and equipping others to be as great as they want to be.
Kevin Denton, First-Year Principal, Buena Vista High School, Buena Vista, Colorado
Before becoming principal at Buena Vista High School, Denton taught math and science at the middle and high school levels in both traditional and Expeditionary Learning schools. In addition to his work in the classroom, he has served on the National Geographic Education steering committee, participated in think tanks with Expeditionary Learning and Fund for Teachers, and presented at national conferences and in MOOCs around developing student growth mindsets within the classroom. Denton also serves on the board of directors for Arise Rwanda Ministries as the education chair and has been integral in the research, design, and development of an innovative, financially self-sustainable, technical secondary school in western Rwanda. Kivu Hills Academy opened in 2016 and serves approximately 75 students who are becoming leaders and entrepreneurs as part of their education.
Ann Reneé Bentley, First-Year Assistant Principal, Mountain View High School, Loveland, Colorado
Bentley, a native of Pearl, Mississippi, earned her B.A. in secondary education from Delta State University (MS) and M.A. in secondary education from Troy University (AL). Her career included 7 years in Alabama and Mississippi teaching high/middle school science and 3 years at Poudre Community Academy (PCA) in Fort Collins, Colorado, where she also completed her principal preparation at Colorado State University. During her 10 years in the classroom, she was honored as District Teacher of the Year in 2010 and served as a professional development coordinator/service learning coordinator during her work at PCA. Bentley accepted the assistant principal position beginning in fall 2017 at Mountain View High School. As a collaborative leader and driven by a passion for supporting students in finding their individual path in life, Bentley believes that all students deserve the opportunity to connect to their learning and be armed with the tools necessary to continue on those paths after high school.
