AACTE began developing a new strategic plan in 2017 when it commissioned an environmental scan, business model review, and market research. In fall 2018, AACTE kicked off the strategic planning process with the first meeting of a Strategic Planning Task Force that included members of the AACTE Board of Directors and National Office staff. The Task Force led an iterative and deliberative process, informed by member input collected through surveys, focus groups, and discussion sessions at the 2019 AACTE Annual Meeting. The AACTE Board of Directors received regular updates on the Task Force’s progress and weighed in with their own perspectives. The Board and Task Force took seriously members’ call for a bold and visionary plan that will enable AACTE to play a leadership role in revolutionizing education for all learners. In September 2019, the Board finalized the full strategic planning framework that consists of new vision and mission statements, core values, and strategic priorities. The National Office Staff will work now to draft operational plans based on that framework over the next several months.

Leading Educator Preparation Association Releases New Strategic Plan
(October 24, 2019, Washington, D.C.) – The American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) publicly announced today their new strategic plan effective through 2023. The plan reflects the Association’s ongoing commitment to high-quality educator preparation while leveraging opportunities to be forward thinking in addressing challenges that come from an ever-changing educational landscape.
“It positions AACTE to truly revolutionize educator preparation,” said Kim Metcalf, chair of the AACTE Board of Directors and dean of the college of education at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. “It provides AACTE members support and encouragement to be innovative in ways that address not just today’s needs in our local communities, but the needs that those communities will have in years to come.”
AACTE has refocused its efforts around three significant strategic priorities:
“Our new strategic plan is incredibly visionary and bold. It speaks to the current issues of today with a level of detail and commitment that is absolutely essential to move the field forward,” said Lynn M. Gangone, AACTE president and CEO. “This gives an opportunity to reinvigorate the importance of teaching as a profession.”
Participation by AACTE members in developing and vetting the plan was robust. Member surveys were sent to more than 5,000 individuals, focus groups were held, and member leaders served on a Strategic Planning Taskforce that engaged key stakeholders.
