SUMMARY:State Strategies to Support High-Quality, Paid Teacher Residency Programs
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Learning Policy Institute\nCo-sponsored by the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, EdPrepLab, and Pathways Alliance\nAmidst persistent teacher shortages, a number of states are successfully recruiting future teachers and providing high-quality preparation through paid teacher residency programs. California and Texas have both made compelling progress in seeding and sustaining teacher residencies as a strategy for building high-quality teacher pipelines statewide. Through these residencies, schools have increased access to teachers equipped to deliver powerful, deeper learning experiences that enable students to not only learn content, but to also collaborate, think critically, solve problems, and engage in reflective practice. Effective policies for funding and scaling up these residencies have been important to launch, expand, and sustain high-quality programs that help address shortages of well-prepared teachers.\nDuring this event, LPI researchers, and policymakers and practitioners from both states will discuss the impact of state investments in California and Texas and pathways to sustainable funding sources. Attendees will learn about seeding, sustaining, and scaling up paid teacher residencies and the role policymakers play in the process.\nSpeakers\n\nSarah Beal, Executive Director, University School Partnerships for the Renewal of Educator Preparation\nJennifer Bland, Senior Researcher, Learning Policy Institute\nPK Diffenbaugh, Superintendent, Monterey Peninsula Unified School District\nAdam Ebrahim, Chief Deputy Director, California Commission on Teacher Credentialing\nCheryl Holcomb-McCoy, President and CEO, American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education\nRigel S.
