Special Study Groups (SSGs)

AACTE provides individuals from member institutions with opportunities to participate in Special Study Groups (SSGs). SSGs are unique groups that are initiated, organized, and self-funded by participants, yet are approved and overseen by the Association's Board of Directors. Initially established at the October 1988 meeting of AACTE's Board of Directors, SSGs were formed to investigate areas of professional education that are of interest to faculty of member institutions. Historically, SSGs have explored the areas of multicultural education, gender issues, Historically Black Institutions, elementary education, admissions and retention, arts and sciences, international education, para-education, race and racism in education, service-learning, women in the deanship, deans of color, sustainability in education, and social and cultural foundations.

Current AACTE SSGs include:

Education for Sustainability

Education for Sustainability (EFS) is a vision of education that seeks to balance human and economic well-being with cultural traditions and respects for natural resources. The Education for Sustainability Special Study Group (EFS SSG) provides a forum for teacher educators interested in integrating sustainability into the Preservice and on-going professional development of preK-12 teachers. The EFS SSG focuses particularly on strategies for implementing EFS in teacher education programs and on increasing the knowledge base among teacher educators related to EFS.

Women in the Deanship (WID)

The chief purpose of WID is to provide an opportunity for communication and professional networking among members interested in women in the deanship. Membership in WID is available to individuals affiliated with AACTE member institutions who are education deans (current and past), as well as assistant and associate deans, persons in equivalent positions, and those interested in pursuing those roles. Regular meetings are held twice a year: a program and business session during the Annual Meeting of AACTE, and a three-day workshop in the summer to conduct business, offer opportunities for networking, and provide a program that addresses current issues, research interests and/or professional development.
