Bold Ideas for Improving
Teacher Education and Teaching –
A Focus on the Journal of Teacher Education 2010 Inaugural Double Issue

10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

The College of Education at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) will serve as the new institutional headquarters of the JTE under the editorship of a five-member team comprised of Drs. Sandra J. Odell, Elizabeth Spalding, Jian Wang, Cari L. Klecka, and Emily Lin. Launching the first issue of their editorial tenure with a double issue of the JTE (January/ February 2010), the team will facilitate a discussion among several of that issue's contributors regarding the bold ideas that have been crucial, not only to the advancement of human knowledge, but also have been fundamental to developing and sustaining scholarship in teacher education.

Speakers will discuss their bold ideas for practice-focused transformation, engagement in political struggle, internally initiated changes, learning to teach for diversity, and challenging popular assumptions.

In addition to holding the John E. Cawthorne Chair in Teacher Education for Urban Schools, Marilyn Cochran-Smith directs the Doctoral Program in Curriculum and Instruction at Boston College's Lynch School of Education. She earned her Ph.D. in Language and Education from the University of Pennsylvania in 1982 where she was on the faculty of the Graduate School of Education until going to Boston College in 1996.

Along with Dr. Cochran-Smith this Forum panel will feature national and international teacher education leaders from multiple diversity communities in a thoughtful and spirited discussion of what it means to make good on the promise of teaching all students.

Challenges of Reclaiming Professionalism

Lee S. Shulman is president emeritus of The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, having served for 11 years as its eighth president.

Participants at this Forum will have the opportunity to engage in roundtable discussions focusing on questions centered on the need for professionalism. This conversation will be complemented by an update on the discussions held as part of the Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate (CPED) initiative.
