STANDARDS AND PRACTICE

STEP Standards-based Teacher Education Project (STEP)®
Meeting P-12 Standards Through Teacher Development and Institutional Accountability

The STEP project focuses on institutional accountability for the preparation of teachers who can help P-12 students meet academic standards.

STEP is based on three principles: (1) Teachers must know the subjects they are teaching; (2) Teachers must know how to teach students to learn at high levels; and (3) Teachers must know how to monitor and assess how well students are learning. The STEP process employs P-12 academic content standards as tools to improve the requirements, curriculum, courses, and assessments of teacher preparation. STEP has helped campuses create multiple assessments that judge teacher quality in terms of standards-based teaching and learning and determine how well teachers are prepared to promote student learning. Alliance for Curriculum Reform (ACR)
Comprising approximately two dozen member organizations with a significant national interest in K-12 curriculum and school reform, ACR seeks to unify, support, and extend the work of its member organizations in improving curriculum, instruction, assessment, and educator preparation and professional development. The Alliance's vision is that every individual deserves a coherent, balanced, comprehensive education provided by caring and competent educators. AACTE is a founding member of ACR, which officially became a membership organization in 1992. For more information, visit http:/www.acr.uc.edu

Teacher Certification and Licensure
An essential link between teacher preparation and teaching is teacher certification and licensure. AACTE has established working relationships with the professional bodies that contribute to state certification and licensure for teachers and school leaders and to national teacher certification. These professional organizations include the Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC); the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) and the Interstate Consortium on School Leadership (ICSL).
