On October 11, 2011, Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA), chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, introduced a bill to reauthorize the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). The Committee is scheduled to markup this bill on Tuesday, October 18. to see AACTE's letter to the Committee with a response to the bill and recommendations.

In September 2011, President Obama and Secretary Duncan announced the administration's plan to release waivers to states not prepared to meet the AYP provisions set in No Child Left Behind. In return, states must commit to implementing college and career ready standards, establishing a new AYP coupled with identification of priority, focus, and rewards schools, and developing rigorous teacher and principal evaluations.

The recommendations are based on talking points drafted by the group earlier in March.
On March 15, 2010, AACTE released a statement in response to the Obama administration's "A Blueprint for Reform: The Reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act.
In December 2009, AACTE submitted recommendations to the U.S. Department of Education regarding the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. These recommendations are just the initial platform that AACTE is putting forward, and as the ESEA reauthorization process progresses, AACTE will continue to weigh in with the Administration and Congress.
