Salary range is $80,000 - $100,000, commensurate with experience.

Purpose of the Position

The Senior Director for Professional Issues will provide leadership for the development and management of programs, activities, and member services related to the professional issues of educator preparation, including accreditation, research, and program effectiveness relative to teacher education and student achievement. This new position will be a part of AACTE's management team and will report to the Senior Vice President for Policy, Programs, and Professional Issues. The senior director will also have direct involvement with the President and CEO.

Functions and Responsibilities

The Senior Director for Professional Issues will supervise staff in the Programs and Development Department and in the research area, work with other directors and vice presidents to coordinate association-wide activities and initiatives, and work directly with AACTE members. The senior director will promote AACTE member programs, develop leadership opportunities, and design programs and activities that serve the needs of AACTE members. Specific duties will include the following:

  • Develop a professional issues agenda for the association and lead its implementation, including research, programs, development, and outreach.
  • Organize and supervise professional issues staff to carry out the approved agenda.
  • Oversee programmatic activities including the Teacher Performance Assessment Consortium, the collection and use of PEDS data, the Holmes Scholars Program, and partnerships with affiliate organizations.
  • Serve as the association's liaison to NCATE/CAEP (manage the selection process, data files, and communications regarding AACTE appointments to the NCATE/CAEP policy boards and Board of Examiners; provide information to the AACTE Board of Directors and member institutions concerning accreditation issues; manage work with NCATE/CAEP on joint projects).
  • Develop and oversee a fellowship program that brings in faculty and/or students from member institutions for temporary placements within the association to further the work of the association as well as the fellows' development.
  • Develop a data base that identifies expertise among the association's members in fields such as STEM, reading, mathematics, and impact on K-12 student performance.
  • Develop a data base to track policy-relevant, evidence-based information, reports, and studies.
  • Build collaborative relationships with other national associations (such as the Data Quality Campaign, Phi Delta Kappa, and specialty professional associations)  in order to leverage resources and ideas to further AACTE's mission and goals.  
  •  Manage financial resources of the division, including external grant funds, in the most cost-effective manner.
  • Provide content direction for Annual Meeting programming, to include working with the Committee on Meetings and Professional Development on the theme and strands and managing the selection of the association's internal sessions.

Qualifications

  • Earned doctorate in education field
  • Substantial experience in the field of teacher preparation in higher education
  • Knowledgeable about professional accreditation for educator preparation programs
  • Strong skills in oral and written communication
  • Success in developing cooperative working relationships with individuals, groups, and organizations
  • Proven abilities in leadership, management and supervision, personnel selection and evaluation, team building, and coordination
