Major Forums Share Perspectives
Human beings have a natural inclination to “keep up with the Joneses.” When doing so results in the implosion of your personal finances in order to possess one more flat-screen television than your neighbor owns, it can be a decidedly negative approach to life.
In most professions (including educator preparation), however, benchmarking processes and performance against those of peers and competitors can be a powerful driver of creativity, innovation, and higher standards. But drawing comparisons and conclusions is rarely a straightforward endeavor and is usually complicated by a long list of variables.
The final two Major Forums that round out this year’s inspiring agenda will allow attendees of AACTE’s 65th Annual Meeting to hear varying perspectives from other states – and other nations. Are you ready to take the first steps in reflecting on how your institution, your state, and this nation are keeping up?
State Policy Reform: Teacher Preparation Program Accountability
Panelists will explore efforts in states to reform educator preparation program accountability systems. Issues of ranking and rating programs and what the research says about the challenges and opportunities associated with these new accountability systems will be highlighted. This panel is sponsored by the Advisory Council of State Representatives (ACSR).
Presenters: Rebecca Watts, Ohio Board of Regents; Jeanine Burns, Louisiana Board of Regents; Diane Ullman, University of Connecticut; Cory Koedel, University of Missouri
Moderator: Rick Ginsberg, University of Kansas
International Perspectives on Education Reform
Nations that are frequently cited as high education achievers have often taken vastly different education reform paths than the United States has taken. Panelists will examine how other countries are moving forward with reforms, particularly in teacher preparation, and what lessons can be drawn from the United States.
Presenters: Vivien Stewart, Asia Society; James Rogers, Universities’ Council for the Education of Teachers (UK); Marc Tucker, National Center on Education and the Economy
Moderator: Yuhang Rong, University of Connecticut
Will these two Major Forums make your priority list in Orlando, Florida, February 28-March 2, 2013? If so, you may want to check out these AACTE extras before you travel:
- International Perspectives on Education Reform Presenter Vivien Stewart recently published A World-Class Education: Learning from International Models of Excellence and Innovation on best practices for developing and maintaining a high-quality teaching profession and the implications of global trends for creating curriculum, instruction, and assessment systems for the 21st century. An interview with Stewart is available at http://www.pbs.org/wnet/wherewestand/tag/vivien-stewart/
- Attendees of State Policy Reform: Teacher Preparation Program Accountability are encouraged to check out “Teacher Preparation Programs and Teacher Quality: Are There Real Differences Across Programs,” a study published by CALDER and available at http://www.caldercenter.org/publications/upload/WP-79.pdf for a sneak peek at what is certain to be a provocative presentation.
