Major Forums Give Voice to New Ventures
The classroom of 2013 certainly looks much different than what most of us recall of our own school days. And while no one has a crystal ball, it’s your job, as a professional in educator preparation, to imagine the classroom of 2023. That’s why the theme for AACTE’s 65th Annual Meeting, “Embracing the Future: Vision, Venture, and Values,” is so appropriate.
This year’s assembly of Major Forum presentations will provide Annual Meeting attendees with ample opportunity to enhance their skills and their understanding of the issues and concerns that will shape education in the decades to come. Consider these two sessions that will give voice to the future:
Voices From the Field: The Impact of edTPA on New Teachers and Teacher Preparation Programs
Some 7,200 teacher candidates at 165 institutions across 22 states participated in the edTPA field test in spring 2012. edTPA is now the first nationally accessible teacher performance assessment. Join a panel of teacher educators, state policy makers, and candidates to find out how the edTPA process is supporting candidate readiness, program improvement, and state teacher preparation policy.
Presenters: Diana Lys, East Carolina University; Linda Tomlinson, Illinois State Board of Education; Desiree Pointer-Mace, Alverno College; Kathryn Miszewski, Lake Shore Middle School (WI)
Respondent: Barnett Berry, Center for Teaching Quality
Moderator: Andrea Whittaker, Stanford University
Journal of Teacher Education Major Forum: Preparation and Practice of Next-Generation Teacher Educators
AACTE’s own Journal of Teacher Education (JTE) is the premiere peer-reviewed journal for teacher preparation, providing a vital forum for considering practice, policy, and research in the field. The JTE editorial team will convene a group of eminent scholars to discuss how teacher educators learn to facilitate preservice and in-service teacher learning, as well as the impact of recent policies on teacher educator preparation.
Presenters: Stephanie Knight and Jacqueline Edmondson, Penn State University; Etta Hollins, University of Missouri at Kansas City; David Imig, University of Maryland, College Park; Drew Gitomer, Rutgers University
